The Yellow Wallpaper - casting call
Adaptation by the award-winning Another Soup and the creative team behind the hugely successful The Soul of Wittgenstein, which headlined the 96 Festival at Omnibus Theatre earlier this year. The Yellow Wallpaper will headline Omnibus Theatre's summer season, Whispers From The Walls, from 5-24 June 2018.
We are looking for a versatile and experience performer to cast as ALICE, a young mother (21-35), who is confident in their craft and will relish a short but intense rehearsal process.
Email Dave to apply.
After huge success with The Soul of Wittgenstein, which headlined the 96 Festival in February, Dave Spencer and Another Soup return to headline Omnibus Theatre’s Summer Season, Whispers From The Walls, with a new adaptation of the classic Gothic short story, The Yellow Wallpaper.
Alice has not formed the correct bond with her baby. That’s what her doctor and husband say. Isolated from her child and banished to the country for ‘rest’, Alice falls further down the rabbit hole of her own mind. The wallpaper haunts her. But is she really sick, or are there more sinister forces at play?
Based on the cult short story by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, Another Soup returns to Omnibus Theatre, after huge success with The Soul of Wittgenstein, with a haunting cautionary tale for the modern age. Updating the story, Ruby Lawrence shows us the damage that we can do when we do not listen, and when we force our own narratives onto others. The Yellow Wallpaper explores a broad range of subjects including misogyny, gaslighting, mental health, domestic abuse, politics, and post-natal depression.
Rehearsals (11am - 6pm): Monday-Saturday, 21 May - 26 May and 28 May - 2 June 2018.
Tech and Dress: 4 and 5 June 2018
Run: 5 June - 24 June 2018 (no performances 19-21 June, Tues-Sat 7.30pm, Sun 4pm)
Closing date for applications: 20/04/2018
Castings will take place on Friday 20 April 2018 at So & So @ The Manor.
Auditionees will be asked to familiarise themselves with the script and we will then pick a piece to read together at the audition.
Alice is young mother who suffers from an unnamed mental condition. Her daughter is taken away from her for the good of both of them. She is playful and charming, but has a feisty, petulant and rebellious side. She is infantilised by her husband and indeed those around her. Over the course of the play, we see her decline into insanity.
Playing age: 21 - 35
A fee of £281.88 per rehearsal week will be paid (36 hours at NMW), totalling £563.76.
Performances will be paid at a session fee of £23.49 (3 hours at NMW), with 15 performances in total, resulting in £352.35.
Tech and dress rehearsal will take place either on the same day or on 2 consecutive days, for which a lump sum of £100 will be paid. No more than 6 hours will be worked on either of these days (if split across two) or 12 hours on the one day.
Holiday pay will also be paid at £91.19.
The total wage payable for this engagement therefore will be £1,107.30.
We welcome applicants from all sections of the community, particularly BAMER performers.
